Witty, poignant and charmingLurie writes like a dream Alison Lurie's "Foreign Affairs" is quite the most witty, poignant and charming book I have read all year. Lurie had me in her spell right from the opening chapter where I was struck by her sureness of touch and intuitive understanding of the workings of the human heart. Her sense of humour is so honest and spot-on it's uncanny. She had me in stitches no sooner than Vinnie Miner boarded the plane and found to her dismay the unlikeliest of travelling companions seated next to her and determined to make conversation. Lurie's protagonists, Vinnie Miner and Fred Turner, are . Alice Berry said Lurid, overwritten, unbelievable, like a Harlequin Romance.. This book won a Pulitzer or other major prize, and I don't understand why. An academic woman goes to London and meets a cowboy on the airplane. Her colleague has an affair with a major British actress who turns out to be schizophrenic and lives part-time as her own maid.Lurid, over-written, not believable, just a bit above the quality of a Harlequin Romance.. Interesting insights ahead Reading this novel was a roller coaster for me not in the usual way of thrills and spills, but in the layers of learning about the main character. First I think, wow is this woman uptight, but then, she's really not. She is just different from me. Now THAT takes talant, to know what's different about your readers and their responses to your characters. She taught me a few things about myself. If you pick this book to read, stay with it, you will be glad.
