Preschool-Grade 2. In his search to find her, which to him seems endless, he learns to dive. Another dramatic image shows a close-up of the loon as he wails a mournful, wavering cry right before his joyful reunion with his mama. In the beginning, watercolor washes of subtle blues and greens establish serenity. But still no mama. As the tension builds, a double-page spread of wavy water whipped by wind and pelted by rain surrounds the tiny loon baby, capturing his fear and loneliness. --Patricia Austin . "Borderline traumatic, but nicely written and pretty illustrations" according to Andrea. I've been collecting MN themed books for our guest room and thought this book about our state bird would be fun. It's actually kind of depressing. It's about a loon that gets separated from its mother. Things keep getting worse/scarier and then eventually the mom comes back with food and they have a happy ending. The story manages to evoke a primal sense of longing and relief, for young and old alike, and the parents have told me that it's become one of the books that their kids ask them to read over and over.Give it a try, you can't go wro. "Such a gorgeous book." according to Alex. Loon baby is a gorgeous read. It is a sweet story to read aloud. Natural poetry and a lovely ending. The illustrations are a perfect match. Great book for a nature-loving family. A good bedtime book.
Anne Hunter’s soft cross-hatched and watercolor paintings shape a serene lake-scape with varied scenes that amplify and illuminate the emotion this book captures. . Atop the rippling waves—the breeze ruffling his fluff—Loon Baby waits, alone, and wonders:Will his mother ever come back? With sensitivity and a spare prose, first-time author Molly Beth Griffin navigates the quiet panic that Loon Baby experiences in the absence of Mama
