DESCRIPTION:

Xu Beihong: Pioneer of Modern Chinese Painting accompanies the first comprehensive exhibition of artwork by Xu Beihong hown outside Asia. It highlights a selection of 61 Chinese ink paintings, oil paintings, drawings, and pastels from the Xu Beihong Memorial Museum in Beijing.Xu Beihong (1895-1953) was among the first Chinese artists to study Western-style painting in Europe, and he is often called the "Father of Modern Chinese Painting." His images, particularly of horses, are familiar throughout China, as are his monumental history paintings Tian Heng and His Five Hundred Warriors and The Foolish Man Who Removed the Mountains. Photographs of Xu Beihong illustrate his life as an artist, educator, and family man.

"Beautifully Curated and Written Book" according to The Luu-Chen, Esq.. A beautiful book. I had never heard of Xu Beihong before going to the show at the Denver Art Museum (though I had definitely seen his horses before the show), but now he is one of my favorite artists. The essays are well-written and give us a glimpse of the life of Xu Beihong, and of course the artwork portrayed in the book is truly magical. I've seen his artwork before in many Chines. chaosweb said excellent biography and art history reference, but not many horses. This is a well made coffee table book that is a catalog of works shown at the Denver museum. The biogrophical sketch and other articles are scholarly works that touch on the artists influences and influence on Chinese artists. Perhaps my greatest disappointment, however, is the lack of horse images. As demonstrated by the choice of cover art, Hsu Bei-Hong was a transformative figure i. Good reference L. Shors This book gives a good overview of the artist. I did not find very many books on this subject. I found the book to be of assistance.
